-    Balance scalp function and secretion.
It is intended for topical application on scalp, followed with massage and washing out.

Ingredients for 100g (3.5 oz) of hair oil (this amount is enough for 8-10 applications):

Ingredients and equipment for homemade hair oilCastor oil … 20g ( .7 oz)
Jojoba oil, golden ... 10g ( .35 oz)
Sweet almond oil … 20g ( .7 oz)
Olive oil, Extra virgin … 10g ( .35 oz)
Coconut oil, virgin … 40g (1.4 oz)
Lavender essential oil … 10 drops
Tea tree essential oil … 15 drops
Rosemary essential oil … 15 drops
Geranium essential oil … 10 drops
Optional: essential oil based on hair type* … 20 drops
Optional: vitamin E … 0.5g ( .17 oz)
*Use lemon EO for oily and normal hair or sandalwood EO for dry hair.

Essential oils should be of therapeutic grade because in this recipe they are used for their healing properties, not just as a scent. This recipe calls for 2% concentration of essential oils, which is a general recommended dosage for most topical applications for adults. For children or elderly people, i. e. for sensitive skin, use only half of this amount.

Equipment: a mixing bowl, a rubber spatula, an accurate digital scale, a 100ml (3.5 oz) plastic bottle with dropper.

Measure coconut oil in the mixing bowl. If coconut oil is not liquid (it depends on room temperature), melt it carefully to prevent overheating. It is enough to heat it up to 30-35oC (86-95oF) or 20-30 seconds in the microwave oven. It should be slightly warm but not hot.

Measuring coconut oil     Melted coconut oil

Set the mixing bowl containing coconut oil on the scale and carefully add liquid oils by measuring precise amounts of each of them. Mix the oils with the spatula. Liquid oils in mixture will prevent further setting of coconut oil even on lower temperature.

Adding jojoba oil     Mixture of base oils and essential oils

Adding vitamin E in hair oilYou can add 0.5g of vitamin E for its beneficial action on the skin. It will also protect oils from oxidation.

If the oil mixture is still warm, let it cool to room temperature. When oils are cooled, add the essential oils carefully, drop by drop, and mix thoroughly. It is not recommended to increase quantity of essential oils because they are concentrated and very potent in their healing action, and also harmful to the skin if not properly diluted.
Pour your hair oil into the plastic bottle and mount the dropper. Label the bottle with all the ingredients to avoid misuse of your oil.

Apply this hair oil on the scalp and massage it into skin to promote blood circulation and absorption of oils into skin and hair roots. Cover the hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap and then wrap it with a towel, wool cap or scarf. Keep the oils on the hair for at least 2 hours or more and then wash it out with shampoo. Proceed with conditioner as usually. The hair cap serves to protect the towel to soak the oils, while the towel or wool cap serve to keep warmth, which promotes blood circulation.
The hair oil made according to this recipe is mild, but very beneficial for hair. Use it regularly once or twice a week, and continue doing so for at least several weeks to achieve its benefits.
Do not make large batches of hair oil since unsaturated fatty acids in oils are prone to rancidity. Jojoba oil and vitamin E in this recipe will increase the shelf life of this mixture, but they still cannot make it to last forever. To extend the shelf life of this hair oil, use only fresh oils and keep it in a cold and dark place.
